METAL MELTING

Steel or iron is melted in 2 electric-arc furnaces of 8.5 tons capacity each. Metal is also melted in induction electric furnaces of the capacity of from 1 to 2 tons. Non-ferrous metals are melted in 2-pot induction furnaces of the capacities of 1 ton and 50 and 100 kg. We also use an electric resistance furnace with a capacity of 200 kg.

METAL MELTING TECHNOLOGY

The limited capacity of the induction furnaces installed in METALODLEW S.A. and a focus on the development of heavy iron castings in the Iron Foundry resulted in the need for implementation of the technology of iron melting in electric arc furnaces.

The advantages of implementation of this technology are as follows:

  • increased production output of the Foundry, thanks to the optimal use of the output of furnace units,
  • creating the conditions for the introduction of heavy castings production from grey cast iron and spheroidal iron,
  • the possibility of carrying out a wide range of metallurgical operations during the iron melting process (adjusting the chemical composition, deoxidisation, carbonisation of the batch),
  • reducing the costs of iron casting, thanks to the use of steel scrap and carbonisation of the batch, with the use of POLKO type chamber feeder,
  • precise control of carbon content in the melted metal and shortening the carbonisation process.

OXYGEN REFINING AND ARGON STIRRING TECHNOLOGY

The technology of steel argon stirring through a gas-permeable profile placed at the bottom of the casting ladle improves the mechanical properties and the quality of surfaces of steel castings. Thanks to the process of metal argon stirring, the content of nitrogen and oxygen in steel and non-metallic intrusions is reduced, which has a decisive impact on the exploitation parameters of steel castings.

Thanks to the implementation of oxygen refining process in the year 2004, positive effects of reducing the costs of founding of high-manganese steel were obtained, as well as the possibility of utilization of own Hadfield’s steel waste scrap metal. Besides the economic benefits, oxygen refining enables founding of steel with a very low carbon content and the improvement of working conditions during the founding.
